JayDax - Icarus Survival Guide

Mission 2 Walkthrough: Spelunking, Cave Exploration & Ore Harvesting

The Icarus Spelunking Mission

In this second 'Spelunking' mission you are asked to enter dark cave systems to extract rare ores and deliver them via an automated cargo shuttle.

Select your character, choose Missions, choose Olympus, and then pick the Spelunking mission:

Field Hints

Predator Baiting: When hunting wolves or terrenus for bedroll materials, take only the fur and leather, leaving the rest of the carcass. It will attract more predators right to you, making it faster to collect the 20 fur and 10 leather you need.

Emergency Shelter

If caught in a storm without wood, crouch (Left Ctrl) and mine your way into the center of a large boulder. It will protect you from the storm, though it will eventually respawn.

Locating the Supply Crate - The Map

Unlike Beachhead, you won't arrive completely empty-handed—equipment has been flown down in a crate. Press M to inspect your map:

Mission Map

Your landing pod position is shown by Landing pod, the promised crate is Crate, and the target investigation area is Target area. When facing in their general direction, these icons appear on your HUD compass.

Terrain Hazard: Heading south-east leads across sheer canyon cliffs. Fall damage scales rapidly:
  • Minor fall: Health loss
  • Moderate fall: Sprained ankle (slows movement speed)
  • Severe fall: Broken leg (drastically cripples movement until you consume a splint)
  • Fatal fall: Instant death

As you traverse toward the crate, hold down E/F to continuously vacuum up fiber, sticks, and loose stones. Immediately craft a stone knife into Slot 1 of your hotbar, followed by a stone axe and stone pickaxe. Keep gathering materials and craft two additional stone knives as backup.

Collect food plants (berries, beans, pumpkins, watermelon) and harvest wild game for fur, leather, meat, and bones. You'll need the fur and leather to make a bedroll and the bone to make a bone sickle.

Use your stone axe to fell trees for at least 100 wood to construct your forward base. Although the mission calls for 350 stone, 220 silica, and 220 sulfur, do not overload yourself yet—keep to roughly 100 stone, 100 silica, and 100 sulfur while traveling so you remain light on your feet. Oxite isn't on the delivery manifest, but collect two stacks (100) to keep your suit oxygen filled.

It's the first book of a series of 9 books telling how humanity was made immortal to prepare for saving Earth from a rogue planetoid in 7141.

Take a touch of humour, add some genetic science and nanotechnology. Steep with conspiracy and stir in murder and despair. Season with romance and garnish with morality.

Opening the Equipment Crate

Once you reach the supply crate in the canyon, open it to claim your gear:

The crate of equipment

Click the crate to inspect and take what you're given (and repair any damaged knives in your inventory!). Do not use the two metal pickaxes at this stage for mining stone, sulfur, silica, or oxite. Reserve them exclusively for extracting higher-tier ores (Platinum, Titanium, and Aluminium) that cannot be broken with stone tools.

Preparing for Underground Cave Threats

Keep your game sound on to detect nearby predators (wolves and terrenus). Inside caves, you face two distinct underground threats:

  • Cave Worms: Erupt from ground burrows and spit caustic poison bolts after a brief pause. The trick is to sprint directly into melee range and stab their mouths before they fire.
  • Bee Swarms: Hives hang from cave roofs, and bees react aggressively to the sound of mining. Swipe repeatedly at the swarm as it attacks with a knife, or better still, bone sickle to disperse it quickly before destroying the ceiling hive.

On the way to the crate and caves, keep a lookout for a salt ore deposit. You can combine 2 salt, 3 oxite, and 3 bones to make a Health Recovery Concoction (a Tier 1 tech item worth unlocking early). Consuming one quickly after bee or worm attacks restores your health rapidly.

Pre-Cave Supply Checklist:
  • Weapons & Tools: 22 fiber, 10 sticks, 15 stones (multiple knives, axe, pickaxe)
  • Shelter Materials: 84 fiber, 130 wood
  • Bed & Campfire: 28 fiber, 18 sticks, 20 fur, 10 leather, 24 stones
  • Wood Rag Torch: 40 fiber, 8 sticks
Tool Repairs

If you have a stone tool that is broken or has low health (see the crate screen), take the opportunity when safe to press I, right-click the tool, and select Repair.

Weapons & Tools Tip

In mission 2 your main weapon is a stone knife. They wear out fast, so craft at least three for your hotbar. Each needs 2 fiber, 2 sticks, 4 stone. Craft one knife first for immediate defense then gather stones for your pickaxe and axe. Use these to harvest trees and boulders to complete your arsenal. Until you get to the canyon destination don't harvest more than one tree and 30 stone - you'll need inventory space and don't need to carry extra weight.

Exponential Growth

If I could give my younger self advice it would be to make use of exponential investing. Start small but regular with Wealthify. You probably won't notice £50 a month now, but your future will!

The Ore Delivery Shuttle & Base Camp

Make your way to the canyon marker where the ore-carrying shuttle touches down. As you draw near, you'll see it land:

Icarus Ore Shuttle

You can immediately deposit the sulfur, silica, and stone you've collected so far directly into the shuttle cargo bay.

Before venturing into caves, build a simple wood shelter near the shuttle drop zone. Craft a small wood chest inside to stash heavy surplus ores. Press P to open the Tech Tree and unlock:

  • Wood Hammer: To repair your shelter after storms
  • Bone Sickle: Gathers extra fiber and crops, but is also exceptionally effective at wiping out bee swarms
  • Wood Building Advanced Set: Gives you half-pieces to reach high ledges and ceiling hives
Tech Tree Upgrades
Advanced Building Unlocks

Place your bed in the shelter and hold E to set your respawn point. That bed is essential—if you die in a cave, you respawn right outside rather than enduring a massive run from the dropship. Set up a campfire (24 stone, 8 sticks, 8 fiber) outside the door. Not too close though or you will set your wood shelter on fire. If it gets dark you can then go to bed to reset the time to 7:00 am.

Spelunking Base
Remember this Canyon!

This canyon is a great place to build a permanent open-world base because the area is packed with resources.

You probably noticed these deep veins in the cave and may have come across some outside:

Deep ore deposits

Later in Tier 3/4, you can place powered drills on these to extract ores automatically!

Mining the Caves & Managing Weight

Near the ore carrier, a short walk up the small canyon on the right, you'll find the first cave entrance. A second cave lies on the left slightly further along. You may need to break through the mouth with a pickaxe:

Canyon Cave Entrance

Before entering, verify your checklist: spawn point set, 3 sharp stone knives, stone and metal pickaxes, oxite, food, water, 3 wood half-pieces, and consume your antibiotic vaccine.

In the nearest cave, defeat the bee swarms. Climb to the ceiling hive using wood half-pieces (hold R to deploy as stairs), destroy the hive, and clear any stragglers. In the other cave, dispatch the cave worms with direct mouth stabs.

Mine Iron, Copper, and Gold using your stone pickaxe. Switch to the metal pickaxe to extract Platinum, Titanium, and Aluminium. Watch your encumbrance bar—if it turns red, drop heavy stone or iron, dump your haul in the shuttle, and run back (hold Shift W) before items you dropped despawn!

Encumbrance Warning

If the canyon caves don't fulfill your quotas, follow the rock walls north toward the glacier base to find more cave systems:
