There is a limit to how many crops you can plant without triggering a bot raid. If you go over that limit you'll get the message 'UNAUTHORISED FARMING DETECTED' followed by a countdown telling you where and when a bot raid will be triggered. The bots will attack and destroy your crops and attack you if you are near. Several bots will attack at once. There are different raid levels also with the lowest level being easy to defeat and the highest level being very difficult to stop.
At it's most basic you can farm a block of 9 crops, carrots, tomatoes and beets. Farm near a water supply because the crops won't grow without water. Basic farming like this was covered here and here.
To get higher level crops you must trade for them.
You need to take your crops to the appropriate vegetable or fruit packing station and use a vacuum pump to 'inject' the crop into the appropriate receptical. You'll then get crates of the crop which have to be transported to the Trader. That means you'll need to have a suitable vehicle.
If you find these pages useful you can return the favour by downloading a FREE ebook from Amazon - even if you don't read it, it will help our rankings! I think you'll probably like it though.
It's the first book of a series of 9 books (so far) which tell the story of how life on Earth was saved from a cataclysmic extinction when a rogue planetoid collides with Earth in 7141. This first book deals with how humanity was made immortal, giving us the incentive to do something about an event so far in the future.
Take a touch of humour, add some genetic science and nanotechnology. Steep with conspiracy and stir in murder and despair. Season with romance between three people in a secret location. Garnish with morality.
The result is 'Immortality Gene', the first in a novel series by John and Shelia Chapman. The ebook of book 1 is FREE and available at multiple retailers

Yes - it's very odd for potatoes to grow on the stem rather than underground. Grow lots because a spud shotgun is an effective weapon against farmbots and a spudgun destroys tapebots.

It's possible to farm 36 plots close together without generating raids provided you know exactly where the 256 x 256 block corners are and don't exceed the 9 crop score in each 9 block section
Watering such a 36 block plot becomes a chore though so an automatic watering system can be set up. How to do this here -Semi-automatic crop farming

I've written a number of short time travel stories. Each is 99p/99¢ and great for taking a break from Scrap Mechanic.

You can deliberately trigger raids to not only farm crops but also gather the rewards from bot destruction. You must keep the total crop value below 80 though or tapebots will appear in raids which will remotely destroy your autofarming.
Such a system needs to be fully automatic apart from occasional intervention to gather scattered bot resources. How to do this here -Automatic crop and resource farming.
Construct some 'Fant plunger shoes.' You'll need 100 plastic, 10 circuit boards, 10 component kits, and 20 glue. With these in your hotbar you'll be able to walk up walls. You can walk up the outside of the Trader building and create a platform on the top. On that platform create a 10 by 20 block of automatic farm boxes. Plant at least 20 potatoes and then other crops. Your aim is to trigger level 10 raids. Up on this platform you'll be quite safe because none of the bots, including tapebots and farmbots can reach you. You however, will be able to destroy them using automatic turret guns.
You can then descend between raids to collect resources or use an automatic resource collector to collect, process and send to you the resources. You can collect the crops automatically also - or simply leave them to trigger ever more agressive raids. A third night level 10 raid gives you the resources from 3 totebots, 6 haybots, 5 tapebots and 3 farmbots.
It's possible to create a farm on the roof of the filling station next to the mechanic station. This decorative feature can't be destroyed by tapebots or farmbots but they can be destroyed by an autoturret. Such a roof farm can be set up to grow the spuds needed by the autoturret and automatically feed them via teleport senders. You are going to need a LOT of potatoes 24 automatic farm boxes are not enough to feed three autoturrets I used 48 here.
The main problem here is getting up on the roof in the first place but you can do that with a combination of lift and temporary platforms. Once you have made it to the roof create some steps at the side and use a toilet to access the steps. Press 'E' twice while pointing at it and you'll find yourself standing on the back of the toilet ready to walk up the steps.
Of course, attracting tapebots and farmbots to the mechanic station isn't normally a good idea so you MUST make autoturrets to destroy these bots.
You'll get lots of scattered bot resources, so it helps to have a vacuum gun to collect them.
Back in 1982 early text only adventure games were being written for home computers. One such game was 'Castle of Riddles' written by Peter Killworth and published by Acornsoft. Now it's been re-written and greatly expanded with added images and sound. Play it on your computer, tablet or even a phone.
