Getting stone and metal 

Scattered around scrap mechanic are outcrops of square shaped rocks. These can be mined for stone and metal. You can mine them by hand or you can make a machine to do the work for you.

Stone can be used as a building material and is the raw material for making sand and then glass.

Mining by hand

It's not enough to hit the rock with your hammer, you'll need to construct a drill to do this. Make one in the autocrafter/craftbot; you'll need 20 blocks of metal 2 and 30 blocks of metal 1. While you are there, make sure you have two bearings and about 100 wood (any sort). Near the stone outcrop place a column of wood blocks and on top a bearing. On top of the bearing add a horizontal arm long enough to strike the stone outcrop. At the end of this arm, facing the stone add another bearing and the drill you made. Strike the drill head so that you spin it and kock it into the rock.
The rock will be broken up into large sections which you can then split into two smaller sectiond with your hammer. Each of thes can be broken again producing stone and metal rods which you can press 'E' on to process into blocks.

Machine processing the rock and metal rods

Rather than holding 'E' on each rock and metal rod for 7 seconds you can use a processing machine to do this for you. Construct the machine - a refinebot at the autocrafter/craftbot from 60 blocks of metal 1, 5 circuit boards and 5 component kits. Pick it up with right click and carry it to where you are quarrying the rock. The rods of stone and metal can then be picked up and inserted into the refinebot using left click.

Better still - the refinebot has only one collection slot - press 'E' on the refinebot to access it. It will stop working if that slot becomes full or a different material is processed. To avoid that connect a chest to the back of the refinebot.

Better still - Use the autocrafter/craftbot to make a collector. Place that down near where you are quarrying stone and it will pick up the rods produced. Once it is full with 20 rods place it near the refinebot and it will automatically take the rods from it as they are needed. Meanwhile you can be filling a second collector.

Incidentally if you are attacked by a haybot while working a collector will also collect robot arms and the refinebot will process those into metal also.
