A transport vehicle

Designed to carry produce to the packing stations and then to carry 12 crates from the packing station to the trader. It's capable of defending itself and mopping up items on the way.

It features:

  • 8 wheel drive
  • 4 wheel steering
  • vacuum pumps to insert produce in the packing stations
  • vaccum pumps to collect items
  • A front grinder and suckOmatic to collect fallen logs and destroy bots which get in the way.

At a later date it can be upgraded to process logs and rods

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Construction details

Start by constructing this frame on a lift:

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Now expand the frame as below

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Add the extras outlined in red

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Now add the suspension blocks, bearings and wheels. In the image below I've outlined the extra bits on the nearside and left the wheels off. The wheels are Fant 5x3 offroad wheels.

Starting Scrap Mechanic

On each side at the back add the side frames, again outlined. Fill in the floor at the back with wood 1 blocks.

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Lower your vehicle to the ground and remove the lift. Fill in the area shown with wood 1 blocks. Add two more blocks in the cutout. This will make it easier to add a chest. You'll need to remove part of the metal bar to make space for it.

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Fill in the gap with the equipment shown below. You'll need a chest set flush with the floor, smooth side upwards, a 6 way connector and a vacuum tube corner. These connect to two more chests positioned with the outlets upwards. From the nearest of these chests are fitted two offset connectors which connect to another 6 way connector attached to an autocrafter. Fill in the area beyond the 6 way connector with an area of 6 blocks of wood 1

Starting Scrap Mechanic

On top of the 6-way connector, next to the autocrafter, place a thin chest. This chest, being the nearest to the autocrafter, is where anything it makes should appear.  Add the wood locks outlined to the floor and connect a wood 1 bar between the side frames.

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Add two smart chests and on the outside, two vaccuum pumps pointing sideways. Add a level 4 seat. Fill in the area behind the seat either side. Add a wooden dashboard and on it place five switches

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Add two vacuum pumps on the front steering arms. On top of those place teleport sending unit. On top of the thin chest place a teleport receiving unit. Using a paint gun paint all the teleport units the same colour.

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Time to make some connections using the connect tool:

  1. Connect the seat to each of the four steeting bearings (the blue dots will turn light green)
  2. Connect the seat to the first switch (1). Connect that switch to the left side vacuum pump
  3. Connect the seat to the second switch (2). Connect that switch to the right side vacuum pump
  4. Connect the seat to the third switch (3). connect that switch to both the front vacuum pumps and all three of the teleport units
Starting Scrap Mechanic

Add the suckOmatic at the front. Slightly in front of that add the row of 6 small grinders. There's a correct technique for adding grinders supported by bearings at both ends - it's detailed here

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Now add the grinders at both sides and at the back

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Time to add engines. You need two, both level  5. Add a fuel tank and connect it to both engines. Connect the seat to switch 4 then connect switch 4 to one of the engines. Connect that engine to the grinder bearings. You only need to connect to the bearings at one side of the grinders.

Connect the seat to switch 5 and then connect switch 5 to the suckOmatic.

Starting Scrap Mechanic

Before you connect up the power to the wheels a word of warning. BE VERY CAREFUL TO NEVER REMOVE THE SEAT unless you have set the engine which powers wheels to be 'off'. If, by accident you do, then you will find the vehicle will take off at speed without you!

Connect the seat directly to the other engine. Connect this engine to each of the wheel bearings. On the left side of the vehicle you'll have to use the connect tool to right click each of the bearings to set them so that they turn forwards

Starting Scrap Mechanic

To stop the rear wheels bouncing up and down on starting and stopping, add a suspension unit as shown below on each side. You may have to remove the block immediately above it and then weld it in place again.

Starting Scrap Mechanic

You are now ready to test the vehicle. Add fuel to the tank and set the motor to about half power. Remove the vehicle from the lift if it is still on one. Sit in the seat by pressing 'E' on it:

  • Check that the A and D keys turn the steering left and right.
  • Check that the W and S keys move the vehicle forward and back and that all 8 wheels turn.
  • Put some carrots or other produce in the left hand smart chest. Make sure that the arrow on the vacuum pump points outward and press 1 to see if it fires a carrot (or whatever) each time it is pressed.
  • Repeat this for the right hand smart chest making sure it fires when 2 is pressed
  • Drop an item such as a circuit board or corn cob in front of the vacuum pumps at the front. You can do this by standing in front of a vacuum pump, Pressing 'I' and right dragging an it into the space between your inventory and the hotbar. Then, sitting in the seat, check that pressing 3 causes the vacuum pumps at the front to suck up items and that any items go into the thin chest. You may have to leave the seat and press 'E' on the vacuum pumps to make the arrow point upwards.
  • Check that pressing 4 turns on all the grinders.
  • Check that the suckOmatic is set properly. I set length 5, width and strength to full. Sitting in the seat and pressing 5 should turn the suckomatic on and even it there is no item in front you should be able to see if it's working.

Possible improvements

Add a chest in front of the autocrafter and load it with spare fuel and food. The extra weight at the front helps steering, especially if you are carrying 12 produce crates. For the same reason it's a good idea to fully load the other chests at the front with produce.

If you remove the floor around the single chest at the back you'll have enough space to install a Fant inline refinery and Fant collector behind it. The single chest you remove will fit on the end of the refinery. To make the inline refinery though, you'll need to get a warehouse key though by destroying a farmbot. You won't be able to do that until you have traded enough crates of produce to obtain a spud shotgun, the weapon you need to destroy farmbots.

If you find this guide useful...

Can you help me out?

If you find these pages useful you can return the favour by downloading a FREE ebook from Amazon - even if you don't read it, it will help our rankings! I think you'll probably like it though.

It's the first book of a series of 9 books (so far) which tell the story of how life on Earth was saved from a cataclysmic extinction when a rogue planetoid collides with Earth in 7141. This first book deals with how humanity was made immortal, giving us the incentive to do something about an event so far in the future.

Take a touch of humour, add some genetic science and nanotechnology. Steep with conspiracy and stir in murder and despair. Season with romance between three people in a secret location. Garnish with morality.

The result is 'Immortality Gene', the first in a novel series by John and Shelia Chapman. The ebook of book 1 is FREE and available at multiple retailers

Bluebird

Bluebird is  an amphibious vehicle which is fast on both land  and water. It has the ability to collect water, oil  and chemicals. In addition it is fitted with a suckOmatic which allows it to transport caged farmers. Bluebird can be difficult to steer at high speed and tends to pull to one side. To help steering it has four wheel steering and drive and  there are small Fant 'wings' mounted on the steering arms to help stabalise it.

Constructing Bluebird

Construction

Start out by constructing the frame shown below. It's made of metal 3. The wheels are the large Fant 7x7x7 ball wheels.

Constructing Bluebird

On the frame create this outline of Fant 'clean' blocks

Constructing Bluebird

You can then add wedge blocks to smooth out the bow and start tapering the sides.

Constructing Bluebird

Add more wedge blocks to complete the bow. I've outlined the edges in red to show them up better. I've also added a chest.

Constructing Bluebird

At the stern where the gap in the frame is, add a vacuum pump  and fill in the rest of the area with clean blocks.

Constructing Bluebird

Theres a big enough gap under the frame to fit a bedI'v also added two more chests and a gas engine level 2 in the gap at the bow.

Constructing Bluebird

Before you add the level 2 seat, create a 5 x 4 platform on it of wood 1 blocks. This platform raises the level of the driver so that if Bluebird enters a pool of oil or chemicals the driver is far  enough above the surface not to be killed by the chemicals. Without this platform you can enter a viceous circle of dying, respawning, and dying again which is difficult to get out of.

Constructing Bluebird

An arm at the back holds the sucOmatic. You can also see that  a thin chest and vacuum pipe corner have been added connecting the chests

Constructing Bluebird

Once the seat has been added connect it to the four steering arms. Make sure the bearings on those turn in opposite directions at the front and back. Add a fuel tank but leave it empty. Don't add fuel to the engine either or Bluebird may take off without you.

Constructing Bluebird

Now connect the seat to the engine, the fuel tank to the engine and the engine to each of the four wheel bearings. You'll need to right click on the bearings on one side to make them turn forwards.

Constructing Bluebird

Add two switches and connect them to the seat. One switch will control the suckOmatic and the other the vacuum pump. Set the vacuum pump direction arrow to point upwards so that whatever it sucks up goes into the chests.

Constructing Bluebird

One thing left to do - paint Bluebird blue. You'll need a paint gun and paint ammo. Select the colour by pressing 'Q' while the gun is selected in your hotbar.

Constructing Bluebird

You might also want to create a blueprint of Bluebird so that if you start a new game you can quickly re-create it. With Bluebird on the lift, press 'E' on the lift and the save creation menu will appear.

Constructing Bluebird

Try taking Bluebird for an extended ride. I suggest you take extra fuel in the front chest and extra food. If you keep following the coast on your right you will eventually find  the haybot campsite where  there are three caged farmers. You'll have to destroy some bots to get them so remember to make use of Bluebird's bed to reset your spawn point before you go.

Making a logging machine

It can be tedious logging by hand but fortunately you can make a vehicle to do the logging and processing for you. It will even deal with any bots which get in the way. It will happily deal with both small and large trees. Here's one in action:

Want to make this? Details are on the page about getting wood.

Making a quarrying/mining machine

You can mine the cuboid rock outcrops for stone and metal but it can be tedious, but fortunately you can make a vehicle to do the mining and processing for you. Like the logging machine, it will also deal with any bots which get in the way and process any logs left aound. Here's one in action:

Want to make this? Details are on the page about a quarrying machine.

Take to the air (without cheating)

I'm sorry to tell you but the page which details my flying machines isn't ready yet. I know some of you will be disappointed but I will make this available soon.

I also know that many of you will want to know how you can take to the air with cheating. Here you go:

  • Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • Type /cheat and press Enter again.
  • Press the Enter key on your keyboard again.
  • Type /fly and press Enter again.
  • To stop flying use the Enter /fly Enter sequence again.
Spacebar moves you up and Ctrl moves you down. W becomes the direction you are facing. While flying the Shift key moves you very quickly.
Note: you can pick things up while flying but you can't put things down until you have stopped flying.
Or maybe a free online interactive adventure story?

Back in 1982 early text only adventure games were being written for home computers. One such game was 'Castle of Riddles' written by Peter Killworth and published by Acornsoft. Now it's been re-written and greatly expanded with added images and sound. Play it on your computer, tablet or even a phone.
