Back in 1995, when I first started to use Internet, I came across a web page which showed a building behind a shimmering lake of 'water'. I didn't know what it was but took the web page apart to find out how it was done. What I'd found was a 'Java Lake Applet' and I soon learnt how to create them and other Java Applet pages.
In 1997 Dax and I began to meet using Yahoo Animals chat site and then ICQ. We both were exploring Internet and social media. Dax came across one of Thomas Kinkade's paintings and I set about re-creating it as a Java Applet. It was very much a discovery page for us since:
The Web doesn't remain static though and browsers removed support from Java applets because they were deemed a security risk. Our Lake applets stopped working which is a shame since they represent a part of early web history.
They can still be persuaded to work though with a bit of tweaking. This new version of 'Serenity' has been updated using JavaScript and HTML5 so that you can see the effect. You'll find there is a slight pause while it loads.
